Public Radio Stations
These stations depend primarily on funding from the listening public (hence the name). They are generally commercial free and the programming is often art and education oriented with special talk and music segments that get little or no attention on commercial radio. Jazz, blues, and classical music are popular.
Most public radio stations incorporate programming from networks such as National Public Radio (NPR). Commonly, public radio is also associated with the local higher educational institution.

And then there is Grateful Dread Radio, your member-supported multigenre music and public service radio station, a project of The Armchair Activist since 1996. GDR isn't about profit; it's all about community building and making a better world and while our membership base is slowly growing, most of the bills are paid for by the station manager from her own pocket (and her kids' college funds). So while we as Internet-only broadcasters may be refused affiliation with Pacifica and NPR and PRI types and all -- we sure can't afford any of that programming anyway -- we are just as "public" as any PBS outlet. Maybe even moreso, because our families' lives literally are on the line to create the best 24/7/365 package of entertainment, information and inspiration that we can for our listeners. Check us out. Support our effort if you can. Most importantly, do your part to be of service. Help us to make the world a cleaner, fairer, better informed, peaceful place offering truth and justice for all.
